Warhammer Renaissance armyproject 2024
Inspired, like many before us, by the White Dwarf articles series "A Tale of Four Gamers" (WD 218->);
a couple of Swedish Warhammer enthusiasts recently decided to make a small armychallenge for the coming year. Beginning January 2024, we will be introducing and presenting our armyprojects monthly.
The guidelines are as follows:
2000 points worth of army, for the fan-made Warhammer Renaissance ruleset, presented each month in batches of ~400 points.
We will each start the year by introducing our respective armyprojects and ideas.
The sixth and last month will be for finishing leftovers or extras, summarizing our efforts and presenting our finished armyprojects.

Part 6 - ScatteredFlesh's Beastmen
Time seems to move a lot faster in this realm than that of the Old World... That's my excuse for my lack of posts, anyway! I've been keeping at it with the hobbying, steady and perhaps a bit slow, sometimes fantasy-related and other times not. While I do have another few units I want to add to the army, I was itching to do a full army picture, and besides, the only unit I have yet to add to reach 2000 points is just a single miniature. I might post it when it's done, but I won't spoil the surprise for now. So, let me present - The Thorns of Chaos warband!
I also got to play my first game with the army yesterday, and in honor of that, I decided to make a kind of cover art for my army list. It's a digital collage of different artworks, don't ask me who the artists are because I have no idea (except for the smaller guys above the text which I'm pretty sure are by Blanche).
And now to the units! Here's one of my favorite sculpts ever. Don't tell James W. Shop, but it's not the original, I found this one on cults3d. Whatever it takes to get the opportunity to paint this awesome mini...
One of my favorite things in Fantasy is the magic, so I couldn't help myself but add another shaman to the army. I think it turned out quite nice, I love the colors... And it was fun to experiment with some OSL, although the pics don't quite do the eye-annihilating saturation of the green eyes justice. I did it by doing a tonne of layers of AK's green fluor enamel paint.
I know it's a lot of characters, but I love doing them, so here's another one! My girlfriend went "ew!" when she saw the... Let's call it a banner... On this guys back - so I'm gonna call it a success.
This is a fun one - some may call it cursed, but I think it's just fun. A few months ago, I visited Malmö with some new wargaming friends I made through the discord for the event at which I made this kitbash. I found a familiar bit in the pile some generous southerners had put together for everyone to use... It was the body of a dragon ogre! I immediately thought "damn, I wouldn't use a rare (and expensive) bit like that to kitbash... Or would I?" And then I found a head that fit perfectly with the neck, so I just let it lead me to where it needed to go. Still, I was missing a leg and an arm. And then, I found the cheapest bit in the whole pile - A cheap plastic dinosaur, so I chopped its leg off with some snippers. That's when I knew that a truly cursed kitbash was taking shape. The only thing that could make it any more cursed was if I gave it some horrible appendages. So, I got to work with the milliputt. May I present to you - a Chaos Spawn!
Speaking of dragon ogres... Nidhogg has made some friends! They're probably my oldest, most rare and expensive figures I have in my collection, and I made some adjustments to the color scheme of the three that came after Nidhogg. I guess there's always room for improvement. I might do some extra work on Nidhogg just to make it more coherent... But that's for another time.
And lastly, here's probably the biggest time sink of all of this post in terms of painting time - a block of ungors! The banner is actually my first 'true' freehand, and by that, I mean that I didn't use a reference when painting it. I just started slapping on some paint without any sort of plan. After a while, a skull was magically taking shape. It sounds absurd, but I really didn't know what I was making until I was quite far into the process. I wish I'd done more pics, but it's already becoming quite a long post, so it will have to do for now... Anyway. In the back lines is a unit filler - OG metal ungors might be the most expensive mini's per point cost in game, so it would have to do. It's my intepretation of a herdstone, the one's I've seen (the official one for example) for sure are nice and aesthetically pleasing... But that's what makes them 'wrong' in my opinion - herdstones are supposed to be a collection of excrement and other gross stuff piled on top of a rock that the goatmen decided was special. So I thought a more grim dark approach was needed.
Thanks for all the awesome posts, and great work everyone! I'm not sure I would have gotten this far without the "push" of some comrades all in the same situation as me - wanting a fully painted army with all the nostalgia and character that Warhammer Renaissance represents! But don't mourn the end, for there are whispers in the warp of another project on the horizon... So stay tuned for that!

Part 5: ScatteredFlesh's Beastmen
A lot has happened since my last post, both in terms of hobbying and this project in particular even if I'm quite late with my part 5. I mean, there's even a part 6 (Niklas amazingly colorful o&g's) out so I'm kind of ruining the chronological order of things in this (kind of half-dead?) blog. Sorry! But as I said, I have a lot to show you, so let's get into it.
I filled out my unit of monopose Gors from all the way back in Part 2 with a command squad. It consists of a Pestigor repurposed as a champion for the squad, as was befitting of his pose, and a kitbashed musician and bannerbearer. The banner design is stolen from an old woodcut piece, I just made the artistic decision to make the goat blue. This kind of sparked the idea that the Thorns of Chaos (as the warband is named) worship this blue goat figure. This kind of ties back to my minotaurs, who have painted themselves blue. The one with the shield is actually a blood bowl figure originally, with an added hand sculpted shield and a 3D-printed brutal weapon, with a hand from the classic plastic zombie kit attached.
The biggest time sink for this project so far has been my chariot I named 'The shit wagon', which is mostly made out of popsicle-sticks. The wheels are hand sculpted and blue-stuff copied, which was then repurposed as a shield for one of the minotaurs above.
And lastly, here's a 3D-print-kitbashed diorama that will serve as a unit filler of some kind. It has a beautiful story behind it. I mentioned my friend passing in my previous post, and Hampus was the leader of the Cheeky Badgers, a kitchen that served the hungry at collaborative events. Now he will serve the hungry on the battlefields of the Old World forever.

Part 4: ScatteredFlesh's Beastmen
Not gonna lie - this month was a bit of a slog! I think mostly because I feel like I don't want to cut too many corners with the bestigors. So it's all regular acrylics. Which means every model craves my full attention and that's hard when you're like me, especially when it's a whole unit of very similar models. Speaking of bestigors...
Am I happy with how they turned out, at least? I mean, not entirely. But it's fine, I'm happy to add them to the growing horde. That's how it is sometimes when I run out of gas, I just kind of slog through it, and the results reflect that. But they're very presentable. They just don't "do it" for me, I guess. What excited me, tho, was this guy that I sneak peeked in part 3 - this time with a base and a temporary paint job.
I don't entirely like how it looks right now, so I've decided to rework most of the paint job. I guess you'll see pictures of that next month! I'm entering it to a painting competition in Stockholm called 08 Open 2.0. It will serve as a unit filler for the bestigors, adding four to the unit. Sculpting this drunken idiot was a blast, and a new experience for me, as I've never sculpted anything of this scale before. Or sculpted anything from entirely from scratch either, honestly. I'm really proud of this guy. Not the paint job, but the sculpting, it took quite a while but I really loved it so I didn't mind. I especially liked that I could do it in bed, hahaha... Unlike painting which would probably end with having paint all over the sheets... Lastly, here is a hero I painted up:
Thanks for reading... Until next time - Keep on rocking in the Old World! And before I go, here's a picture of them all together in the weirdly lit cabinet:
