Building a wood elf army has almost been a generation in the making; I bought and painted some back in 5th ed., but it never came to be an army. Though as a kid I was heavily drawn towards wood elves, inspired by White Dwarf battle reports such as Hail of Doom with David Cain vs Gordon Davidson (WD 190) and my favorite at the time, Awakening of the Wood (WD 199) with Steve Anastasoff vs Tuomas Pirinen.
Being a nostalgic project more than anything else, the army composition is mostly determined by having one unit of each and using my favorite models in the wood elves range. For example, for my unit of 20 Archers I’m using the plastic models from the eighties, inspired by Mike McVey’s wood elf army from WD 141. Another favorite model of mine is the 1985 C34 Life elemental, which I’m using as my mage lord. Painting wise I’m going for an autumn look, by experimenting with oils and glazing.
