Warhammer Renaissance armyproject 2024

Inspired, like many before us, by the White Dwarf articles series "A Tale of Four Gamers" (WD 218->);
a couple of Swedish Warhammer enthusiasts recently decided to make a small armychallenge for the coming year. Beginning January 2024, we will be introducing and presenting our armyprojects monthly.

The guidelines are as follows:

2000 points worth of army, for the fan-made Warhammer Renaissance ruleset, presented each month in batches of ~400 points.

We will each start the year by introducing our respective armyprojects and ideas.
The sixth and last month will be for finishing leftovers or extras, summarizing our efforts and presenting our finished armyprojects.

Part 1: Presenting the armies - Mattias Chaos dwarfs

Short grumpy guys with big hats, what’s not to like?

Add a couple of tusks and some lava bases and you got an army for me.

I’ve always liked the aesthetics of the Chaos Dwarfs and they feel like a somewhat unique army for Games Workshop, no other company or setting really has their equivalent. They feel like something from the past, which they are, and has stayed that way. Even with the newer Forge World models, they still manage to keep some of the slapstick elements. But this is a Warhammer Renaissance / Old World army, so the aesthetics will be in line with that.

When I started to play Warhammer around 2004 the Chaos Dwarves were already a thing of the past it seemed. Maybe you were able to buy the models from Mail Order, but I had not seen one in real life. I remember the user Tjub from the forum of the Gothenburg-based wargaming club YLVA, and he converted Chaos Dwarves from regular Dwarfs and paper pins for hats. I thought they were amazing. My first attempts at Chaos Dwarf models must have been around 2012 or so when I converted a Hellcannon with Crew for my and my friend Håkans Chaos Warriors army. That time I replicated the newer look without the big hats, but the beards and the comedy were still there.

This time I won’t be doing any conversions, nor will I try to find the old models; I will 3d-print everything. It all started with me stumbling upon Fabelzel a couple of years back. He’s a 3d-modeller who does old school miniatures, mostly Chaos Dwarfs. I joined his Patreon, and started to look around for all the other models that I couldn’t get from him. I found a couple of others, Mordin, Max152, maxtobiasweber and Ystlund to name a few. Great thanks to you guys for making this project possible! All the models from these creators are original 3d-sculpts, so no scans of original GW-models, and I will try to keep my army that way. At this point I have collected almost all models that I would like to have in my army. It’s almost just Chaos Dwarfs, so no Goblins or Orcs at this point, but I might add those sometime later. I have spent the last couple of days 3d-printing a bunch of models. I don’t have a real plan or army list right now, I have just printed models that I like and that I know are likely to be in my army. One great thing with 3d-printing is that you can easily mirror models, so even though Fabelzel only has three Warrior models that I like, I can mirror them for a total of six models. But I can also cut off the hats and add other hats (from maxtobiasweber for example), so I won’t be lacking model diversity in the units. Next step is to clean the prints and to start building them.

For Hashut!
